One of the most important things you can do to ensure you grow delicious tomatoes is to make sure you are transplanting tomato plants correctly. You usually will start with a seedling or small plant when you grow tomatoes, but in order to get the best tomatoes you possibly can, you need to make sure the roots are able to spread and the only way to do that is to transplant them into a larger place. Here are some tips to make transplanting your plants easier.
Get the Plant Used to the Elements
During the time the plant is in the starter pot, you will need to get the plants slowly used to the outside conditions. So far in their lives, they have likely never been out in the rain, sun and wind. They will need to get used to the elements slowly before being put outside in them. If not, it will be a shock to them and they will not grow well.
By placing the current pots outside for a few hours of sun or rain during the day, you are helping them heartier for being outdoors full tiime. Make sure you are giving them a rest, and bring them inside where it will be warmer at night.
Transplant to the Garden
When the tomato plants are about a foot in height, they will be ready to transplant outside into your garden. You will need to take the entire plant and place the root ball into the soil. When you dig the hole make sure at least 2/3 of the stem is underneath the ground. Take off any leaves that are going to be underground before covering them with soil.
Studies have shown that tomato plants placed deeper into the ground can grow about twice the size as those grown normally.
